Path of Exile 2 Spirit Walker Leveling Guide: Best Spirit Gems and Builds for Patch 0.5
When Patch 0.5 arrived in Path of Exile 2, I expected the usual balance changes and a few new build options. What I didn’t expect was to spend nearly all of my playtime experimenting with the new Spirit Walker. After leveling multiple characters and testing different setups, I can honestly say this Ascendancy has become one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve had in PoE 2 so far.
The Spirit Walker feels like Grinding Gear Games took several popular playstyles and merged them into a single class. You can play as a fast-moving projectile destroyer, a beastmaster commanding an army of companions, or even a hybrid between the two. The flexibility is what makes it stand out.
In this guide, I’ll go over what makes the Spirit Walker special, how I approached leveling, which Spirit Gems felt strongest, and what I believe works best for players looking to transition smoothly into endgame content.
Why Spirit Walker Feels Different
Most Ascendancies in Path of Exile 2 push players toward a specific identity. Spirit Walker doesn’t.
One moment you’re dashing through maps while launching tornadoes that bounce across the screen. The next, you’re leading a pack of powerful spirit beasts that handle enemies for you. The class constantly rewards experimentation, which is something I think many ARPG players appreciate.
The core mechanic revolves around Spirit, a reserved resource used for permanent buffs, summons, and utility effects.
Unlike Mana, Spirit isn’t something you’re constantly spending and regenerating. Instead, it functions more like a resource budget. Every companion, aura, or persistent effect consumes part of your available Spirit pool.
Because of this, gearing becomes surprisingly important even during the campaign.
Understanding Spirit Management
One mistake I see many new players make is treating Spirit as an afterthought.
In reality, Spirit determines how many powerful effects you can keep active at the same time.
Some of the best ways to increase Spirit include:
- Solar Amulets
- Spirit-focused Sceptres
- High-tier helmets and body armors
- Special corruption modifiers
- Soul Core socket bonuses
The difference between 100 Spirit and 200+ Spirit feels enormous. Suddenly, you can run multiple support effects without sacrificing your primary damage setup.
My personal advice is simple: start thinking about Spirit gear early. Waiting until maps often makes the transition much harder than necessary.
My Preferred Leveling Setup: Twister Spirit Walker
After testing several options, I found the Twister version significantly smoother for league-start progression.
The reason isn’t necessarily raw damage.
It’s consistency.
You don’t have to worry about minion AI, companion positioning, or summoning downtime. You simply move quickly, create tornadoes, and watch entire screens disappear.
Core Combo
The gameplay loop is straightforward:
- Use Whirling Slash.
- Build whirlwind stages.
- Cast Twister.
- Watch the tornado chain through enemies.
What surprised me most was how well the build scales throughout the campaign. Usually, fast leveling builds begin to struggle against bosses, but Twister maintained excellent clear speed while still feeling strong during major encounters.
Best Spirit Gems During Leveling
Not every Spirit Gem feels equally impactful while progressing through the campaign.
These are the ones that consistently impressed me.
| Spirit Gem | Why I Like It |
|---|---|
| Fangs of Frost | Reliable resistance reduction and strong utility |
| Frost Bomb | Excellent support damage against tougher enemies |
| Bear Companion | Surprisingly tanky and useful throughout leveling |
| Owl Spirit Effects | Great synergy with projectile-focused setups |
| Stag Companion | Excellent mobility support in larger encounters |
For pure efficiency, I’d prioritize Frost-based support options early and transition into stronger companion setups once additional Spirit becomes available through gear.
The Hidden Strength of Owl Feather Mechanics
If there’s one feature that truly defines the Spirit Walker, it’s the Owl Feather system.
At first glance, it seems relatively simple.
You gain feathers over time and consume them through dodge rolls.
However, once you unlock the major Ascendancy nodes, everything changes.
A properly timed dodge can dramatically increase projectile count and projectile speed. The result is a massive damage spike that can completely erase elite enemies and bosses.
This mechanic rewards active gameplay rather than passive stat stacking.
That’s one of the reasons I enjoy it so much.
Too many builds eventually become “hold one button and walk forward.” Spirit Walker constantly encourages movement and timing.
My Favorite Ascendancy Nodes
After experimenting with several combinations, these nodes consistently felt strongest.
Primal Bounty
This is where the Ascendancy really starts to come alive.
The additional projectile bonuses immediately improve both clear speed and boss damage.
Matcha’s Gift
Arguably the biggest power spike available.
Being able to consume multiple Owl Feathers simultaneously turns every dodge into a devastating offensive tool.
Wild Protector
For companion-focused players, this node is incredible.
The Bear Spirit provides survivability, crowd control, and additional pressure during boss fights.
The Natural Order
This node unlocks some of the most interesting gameplay in the entire class.
The ability to tame powerful beasts creates a progression system that feels unique compared to traditional minion builds.
Sacred Unity
In my opinion, this is the ultimate payoff.
Everything begins working together, and your character feels significantly stronger than the sum of its individual parts.
Twister vs Minion Spirit Walker
Many players ask which version is actually better.
The truth is that both are excellent, but they serve different audiences.
| Build Type | Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|---|
| Twister | Fast leveling, smooth mapping, high mobility | Requires active positioning |
| Minion | Relaxed gameplay, strong survivability, excellent scaling | Slightly slower campaign progression |
Personally, I prefer Twister during leveling and early maps.
However, once enough Spirit becomes available, the minion-focused version starts becoming extremely attractive for difficult content.
The amount of pressure a full companion army can apply is honestly impressive.
Endgame Priorities
Reaching maps is only the beginning.
Spirit Walker performs exceptionally well in endgame, but proper gearing becomes critical.
My priorities usually look like this:
- Cap all elemental resistances.
- Improve Spirit capacity.
- Increase Evasion Rating.
- Invest into Deflection mechanics.
- Upgrade weapon damage.
- Enhance primary skill gems.
One lesson I learned quickly was not to neglect defenses.
The class feels agile enough that many players focus entirely on offense. Eventually, though, difficult map modifiers and boss mechanics will punish that approach.
Combining Evasion with Deflection creates a much more reliable defensive foundation.

The Importance of High-Level Gems
One of the biggest power spikes in Path of Exile 2 comes from gem progression.
Many players obsess over equipment upgrades while ignoring gem quality and gem levels.
That’s a mistake.
A properly upgraded Twister setup often gains more damage from gem improvements than from several gear upgrades combined.
Whenever possible, save valuable currency for your main skills rather than spending everything on temporary equipment replacements.
The long-term value is significantly higher.
Final Thoughts
After spending dozens of hours experimenting with Patch 0.5, I genuinely believe Spirit Walker is one of the most successful Ascendancy designs currently available in Path of Exile 2.
It offers something for nearly every type of ARPG player.
If you enjoy speed and flashy gameplay, the Twister version feels fantastic. If you prefer commanding an army of powerful creatures, the companion route provides some of the most satisfying minion gameplay currently available.
What I appreciate most is that neither path feels wrong. Both have clear strengths, both scale well, and both remain viable well into endgame progression.
For new players entering Patch 0.5, I’d recommend starting with the Twister setup to learn the class mechanics, then experimenting with companion-focused builds once your Spirit pool and gear begin to mature.
The Spirit Walker rewards creativity, and that’s ultimately why it has become my favorite Ascendancy of the patch. Whether you’re racing through the campaign, farming maps, or hunting endgame bosses, there’s always another way to optimize, another beast to tame, and another powerful Spirit combination waiting to be discovered.
