Is WoW Forever Included in Your Standard Subscription? Cost, Editions, and Paywalls Explained

When Blizzard announced World of Warcraft: Forever at BlizzCon 2026, I think a lot of WoW players had the exact same reaction: Wait, how much is this actually going to cost me?

The announcement sounds simple on paper. WoW Forever is being presented as a permanent, reimagined take on the Classic formula — essentially Blizzard’s attempt at building a long-term Classic+ experience instead of another temporary seasonal experiment.

But then the details about editions, beta access, the new Skyborne race, game time, and premium features started appearing, and suddenly the pricing became a lot harder to understand.

So let’s cut through the marketing language and look at what actually matters.

Do you need to buy WoW Forever?

No — not if you only want to play the core game.

Your existing World of Warcraft subscription or active game time gives you access to the basic WoW Forever experience. There is no separate $40-$60 base-game purchase just to enter the new world.

However, Blizzard has attached some of its most noticeable new features to paid upgrade packs. And, honestly, that’s where things get interesting.

Is WoW Forever Included With a Normal WoW Subscription?

Yes.

If you’re already subscribed to World of Warcraft, WoW Forever follows the same general philosophy as the existing Classic ecosystem.

Your standard subscription gives you access to:

ContentIncluded With Standard Subscription?
Modern WoWYes
WoW ClassicYes
WoW Forever Core GameYes
Traditional Playable RacesYes
Level 60 ProgressionYes
Skyborne RaceNo
Zephras Isle Starting ExperienceNo
WoW Forever BetaNo
Premium CosmeticsNo

That means there is no separate WoW Forever base-game license that everyone has to purchase.

If your goal is simply to create a Human, Orc, Night Elf, Undead, or another traditional character and explore the redesigned Azeroth, your existing subscription is enough.

According to Blizzard’s announced schedule, WoW Forever launches on November 4, 2026, and subscribers can jump into the core experience without buying another base game.

As someone who has spent far too much time in different versions of WoW over the years, I actually like this part of the model. Splitting the player base with another mandatory box price would have been a terrible way to launch a Classic-style MMO.

The premium stuff, however, is another story.

The Skyborne Problem

Here’s the part that is going to generate most of the arguments.

The headline new race for WoW Forever is the Skyborne, a new elven race associated with Zephras Isle. They’re not simply another cosmetic race either. Blizzard is giving them custom animations, voice work, unique class combinations, special druid forms, and a racial ability built around wind-based gameplay.

Sounds great, right?

Here’s the catch:

Skyborne is not included with the standard subscription.

You need the Skyborne Heroic Pack or a more expensive edition to create one.

You also need the upgrade to experience the Skyborne starting zone on Zephras Isle.

This is where I think Blizzard has made its pricing considerably more complicated than it needed to be.

The basic game remains subscription-accessible, but one of the major new gameplay features is effectively placed behind a second purchase.

That distinction is important.

If you don’t care about Skyborne, you can ignore the upgrade packs completely. If you specifically want to play the new race, however, the subscription is no longer the complete experience.

WoW Forever Editions Explained

Blizzard currently has three major digital purchase options surrounding the launch.

Is WoW Forever Included in Your Standard Subscription? Cost, Editions, and Paywalls Explained

Skyborne Heroic Pack — $29.99

The Heroic Pack is basically the “I want the new race, but I don’t need all the extras” option.

You get:

  • Full Skyborne playable race access
  • Zephras Isle starting content
  • Early character-name reservation
  • Cerulean Prideclaw mount
  • Invite-A-Friend launch code
  • Additional cosmetics, transmogs, and tabards

For someone who knows from day one that they’re going to roll a Skyborne character, this is the straightforward purchase.

The important thing is that you’re not buying the actual WoW Forever game here. You’re buying access to premium features attached to an experience that otherwise comes with your subscription.

Skyborne Epic Pack — $59.99

The Epic Pack is aimed much more at the hardcore audience — or, more accurately, people who absolutely cannot resist getting into a new WoW beta.

It contains everything in the Heroic Pack, plus:

  • WoW Forever Beta access
  • 30 days of WoW game time
  • Additional Invite-A-Friend codes
  • Extra cosmetics
  • Premium pets

The beta access is probably the biggest reason people will consider paying the extra $30.

The beta is scheduled to run from September 17 through October 21, 2026, while the full game arrives on November 4.

There is one thing I’d strongly keep in mind, though:

Beta characters are temporary.

Characters created and progressed during the beta will be wiped before launch.

For me, that makes the value proposition pretty easy to understand. If you enjoy testing unfinished systems, finding bugs, exploring new zones before everyone else, and simply being part of the development process, the Epic Pack can make sense.

If you’re the type of player who hates leveling a character knowing that everything will eventually disappear, I’d think twice.

Warcraft Forever Collection — $79.99

Then we get to the big bundle.

The Warcraft Forever Collection costs $79.99 and includes everything from the Epic Pack, along with additional Warcraft-related content.

The package includes:

  • Everything from the Epic Pack
  • Digital access to Warcraft III: Reforged
  • Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom campaign
  • Exclusive Modern WoW housing decorations

There is a fairly obvious audience for this edition.

If you’re primarily interested in WoW Forever, you probably don’t need to spend $80 simply because it is the biggest bundle.

But if you’re also interested in the Warcraft RTS side of the universe, the additional campaign and Warcraft III content make the package considerably more interesting.

One thing worth remembering is that the Modern WoW housing decorations require the Midnight expansion, which is sold separately.

What About the $150 Collector’s Edition?

Blizzard is also offering a physical Collector’s Edition for around $150.

This one is aimed squarely at collectors rather than players trying to minimize their launch costs.

The package includes the digital rewards from the Collection edition alongside a physical statue featuring a classic Dwarf Hunter and bear companion.

There’s also an unusual catch.

Because the physical edition uses a CD key located inside the shipped package, digital preorder benefits aren’t unlocked until the physical box arrives.

That’s something I’d personally want to know before ordering.

If you’re buying a collector’s edition mainly for the physical statue, waiting probably isn’t a big deal.

If you’re buying it because you want immediate digital access, however, this setup is worth considering.

How Much Does WoW Forever Really Cost?

This is where the entire system becomes easier to understand.

Player TypeWhat You Need
Core WoW Forever PlayerStandard WoW Subscription
Player Who Wants Skyborne$29.99 Heroic Pack + Subscription
Beta Player$59.99 Epic Pack
Warcraft Collector$79.99 Collection or $150 Physical Edition
Modern WoW + Forever PlayerSubscription + Any Desired Upgrade

The key word here is subscription.

The premium packs don’t replace your normal WoW subscription.

For example, buying the $29.99 Heroic Pack doesn’t mean you’ve purchased unlimited access to the entire World of Warcraft ecosystem forever. You still need the standard WoW subscription or game time for the normal service.

That makes the Skyborne purchase feel more like a feature unlock than a traditional expansion purchase.

And that’s probably why the community reaction has been so mixed.

Is the $59.99 Epic Pack Worth It?

This is probably the hardest purchase to judge.

On paper, Blizzard has packed a reasonable amount into it.

You’re getting the $29.99-level Skyborne content, 30 days of game time, beta access, additional codes, and cosmetics.

The included game time also has value because it doesn’t start running immediately during the beta. It is intended to activate with the live launch on November 4.

But don’t let the beta access alone convince you that you’re getting some permanent head start.

You’re not.

The beta is temporary, and beta characters are wiped.

For me, the biggest question would be whether you actually enjoy beta testing.

If you do, great. Getting several weeks to explore WoW Forever before the general population arrives can be genuinely fun.

If you simply want to play your permanent character, I’d rather save the money and start fresh on launch day.

There’s something special about a new MMO-era launch when everyone is discovering the world together anyway.

The Cheapest Way to Play WoW Forever

This part is refreshingly simple.

If you’re perfectly happy playing the traditional races and don’t care about Skyborne, you don’t need to purchase anything beyond your existing WoW subscription or game time.

That gives you access to the core WoW Forever experience, including its redesigned world, quests, dungeons, progression, and level 60 endgame.

So the actual entry barrier hasn’t dramatically changed.

The controversy comes from what sits above that baseline.

WoW Forever Profession Changes: Guide to Classic Plus Tradeskills

My Take on Blizzard’s Monetization

As a WoW fan, I have mixed feelings about this setup.

I genuinely like the idea that WoW Forever itself isn’t another standalone purchase. A Classic+ branch should ideally be easy for existing subscribers to try. Making players buy another base game would only create friction.

The Skyborne situation is harder to defend from a player-value perspective.

A new playable race is not just a mount or a cosmetic armor set. It’s something that affects how you actually experience the game from the first minute. Putting it behind a $29.99 upgrade inevitably makes the standard subscription feel less complete.

At the same time, players who don’t care about Skyborne aren’t being forced to pay for it.

That’s the important distinction.

I wouldn’t call the upgrade packs mandatory for playing WoW Forever. They simply become mandatory for specific premium features.

And that means the right purchase really depends on what kind of WoW player you are.

Final Take: What Should You Buy?

If you’re only interested in experiencing the new Classic+ world, keep your regular WoW subscription and spend nothing extra.

If Skyborne is the main reason you’re excited about Forever, the $29.99 Heroic Pack is the relevant upgrade.

If you want to participate in the beta and don’t mind temporary characters, the $59.99 Epic Pack is the package built around that experience.

And if you’re a serious Warcraft collector who also wants the RTS content, the $79.99 Collection is the broader multimedia bundle.

The biggest thing I’d avoid is buying an expensive edition simply because you’re worried about missing out.

WoW Forever’s core game isn’t disappearing behind a paywall. The subscription gets you into the main experience.

The extra money is primarily for Skyborne, beta access, cosmetics, game time, and additional Warcraft content.

For me, that’s the real takeaway from Blizzard’s complicated pricing announcement: you don’t have to buy WoW Forever to play WoW Forever. You only need to buy an upgrade if you specifically want what that upgrade unlocks.
