Halo Combat Evolved Flood Guide: How to Beat the Parasite on Legendary
I’ve replayed Halo: Combat Evolved more times than I can count, and every single playthrough reaches the same unforgettable moment—the first time the Flood appears.
Before that mission, Halo feels like a classic military sci-fi shooter. You’re learning Covenant attack patterns, landing satisfying Magnum headshots, and taking advantage of Elite shield mechanics. Then 343 Guilty Spark happens.
The lights go out.
The music changes.
The Marines disappear.
Suddenly you’re no longer hunting aliens—you’re trying to survive an endless biological nightmare.
Even after all these years, especially in Halo: The Master Chief Collection, I still think the Flood is one of the greatest enemy designs in gaming history. They’re fast, unpredictable, and completely ignore many of the tactics that work throughout the first half of the campaign.
If you’re planning to beat Halo CE on Heroic or Legendary, this is the moment where you have to change your entire mindset. Here’s everything that has consistently worked for me after countless Legendary runs.
Stop Fighting the Flood Like They’re Covenant
The biggest mistake I see from newer players is treating Flood Combat Forms like Elites.
That simply doesn’t work.
Against Covenant troops you’re rewarded for patience, accurate headshots, and careful positioning.
Against the Flood?
You’re rewarded for speed, crowd control, and weapon selection.
Instead of carefully picking enemies apart, you’re constantly managing space. Every second matters because the Flood never really stop coming.
Once I understood this, Legendary became dramatically easier.
Understanding Every Flood Form
Knowing what each Flood unit is trying to do makes encounters much less chaotic.
Infection Forms
These tiny parasites don’t seem dangerous individually.
That’s exactly why players underestimate them.
A dozen Infection Forms can erase your shields almost instantly, and if you’re already weak, they’ll finish you before you even realize what happened.
Whenever I hear their distinctive squealing sounds, I immediately clear them first.
The Assault Rifle works surprisingly well here because its large magazine wipes entire swarms without wasting shotgun ammunition.
Combat Forms
These are the enemies you’ll fight most often.
Marine Combat Forms and Elite Combat Forms both rush aggressively, jump long distances, and happily absorb huge amounts of damage.
The first instinct is usually aiming for the head.
Don’t.
Unlike Covenant soldiers, the real weak spot sits around the chest where the parasite controls the body. Center-mass shots consistently drop them faster than trying to land traditional headshots.
Carrier Forms
Carrier Forms are basically walking explosives.
Most people instinctively destroy them from a distance.
Sometimes that’s correct.
Other times they’re actually useful.
If several Combat Forms are pushing together, letting a Carrier explode in the middle of them often clears half the group for free.
One explosion can save multiple shotgun shells.
My Favorite Weapons Against the Flood
One thing Halo CE gets absolutely right is how differently weapons perform depending on your enemies.
Against the Flood, the sandbox almost completely changes.
| Weapon | My Rating | Why It Works |
|---|---|---|
| M90 Shotgun | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Massive stopping power, destroys Combat Forms instantly. |
| M6D Magnum | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Incredible accuracy and excellent ammo efficiency. |
| MA5B Assault Rifle | ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ | Perfect for Infection Forms and emergency crowd control. |
| Grenades | ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ | Clears tight hallways and grouped enemies. |
| Sniper Rifle | ⭐☆☆☆☆ | Powerful against Covenant but disappointing versus Flood. |
| Plasma Rifle | ⭐☆☆☆☆ | Weak damage and poor stopping power. |
If someone asked me for only one recommendation before starting Legendary, it would be this:
Never voluntarily drop the Shotgun once you find it.
Seriously.
There are very few situations where another weapon is a better choice.
Why the Magnum Is Still Amazing
Halo fans have praised the CE Magnum for decades, and deservedly so.
Against the Flood, it’s less about landing headshots and more about consistent precision.
The Magnum lets you:
- Eliminate distant Combat Forms.
- Conserve shotgun shells.
- Destroy dangerous Rocket Flood before they get close.
- Safely trigger Carrier explosions.
Its versatility makes it the perfect backup weapon.
Positioning Wins More Battles Than Aim
One lesson Legendary constantly teaches is that movement matters more than perfect accuracy.
Whenever I died repeatedly, it usually wasn’t because I missed shots.
It was because I let myself become trapped.
Some simple habits make an enormous difference:
- Always leave yourself an escape route.
- Fight from doorways whenever possible.
- Never reload in the middle of a crowd.
- Backpedal while firing instead of standing still.
- Avoid getting surrounded.
The Flood become much less intimidating once they’re forced through narrow spaces instead of attacking from every direction.
Don’t Ignore Dead Bodies
This mechanic still catches people by surprise.
A Combat Form isn’t necessarily dead.
If Infection Forms reach an intact corpse, they can revive it.
Watching an enemy you just killed stand back up is frustrating the first time it happens.
If I have a spare second, I’ll quickly damage the body again or remove its limbs.
It isn’t always necessary, but it prevents some annoying surprises later.
Legendary Mission Tips
343 Guilty Spark
This remains one of my favorite missions in the entire Halo franchise.
The atmosphere is incredible.
For the opening section, conserve ammunition whenever possible because you won’t have your beloved Shotgun immediately.
Once you finally pick one up, the mission becomes significantly more manageable.
I also recommend fighting near doors whenever possible.
The Flood love overwhelming open rooms.
They hate bottlenecks.
The Library
This mission has become almost legendary within the Halo community.
Some players love it.
Many players absolutely hate it.
Personally?
I think it’s much better once you understand how to approach it.
Instead of constantly pushing forward, slow down whenever Guilty Spark starts opening doors.
Find solid cover.
Choose one direction.
Let the Flood come to you.
Trying to stand in the middle of large rooms usually ends badly on Legendary.
Also, never forget to check overhead.
Combat Forms dropping from vents are responsible for more surprise deaths than I’d like to admit.
Two Betrayals
This level introduces one of Halo’s most entertaining situations: three factions fighting simultaneously.
Use it.
There’s absolutely no reason to rush into battles where Covenant soldiers, Sentinels, and Flood are already destroying each other.
I usually wait.
Watch.
Let everyone weaken themselves.
Then I finish whoever survives.
It’s efficient, safer, and honestly feels like the smartest tactical decision Master Chief could make.
The only enemies I immediately prioritize are Rocket Launcher Combat Forms.
Leaving one alive for even a few seconds can instantly end a flawless Legendary run.
The Maw
By this point you’re close to victory.
Don’t get greedy.
The reactor section becomes much easier if you aggressively use grenades instead of trying to win every firefight with bullets.
Knocking enemies into the abyss is often faster than killing them normally.
Then comes the legendary Warthog escape.
One piece of advice:
Keep driving.
Stopping to fight almost never helps.
The countdown is your real enemy now, not the Flood.
Maintain speed, avoid crashing into walls, and trust the Warthog to smash through smaller enemies.

Small Tricks That Made My Legendary Runs Easier
After multiple complete playthroughs, these little habits consistently improved my survival rate.
- Reload only after creating distance.
- Listen carefully—the Flood often announce themselves before attacking.
- Save shotgun shells for Combat Forms instead of Infection Forms.
- Use Carrier explosions whenever enemies are grouped together.
- Scan every room for Rocket Launcher variants before moving forward.
- Don’t panic when your shields break; movement usually saves you faster than returning fire.
None of these tricks are complicated individually.
Together, however, they completely change how manageable the campaign feels.

Final Thoughts
The Flood remain one of the greatest enemy factions ever created in a first-person shooter because they completely force players out of their comfort zone.
Everything Halo teaches during its opening hours suddenly changes. Precision gives way to survival. Perfect headshots matter less than smart positioning. Powerful weapons become useless while the humble Shotgun turns into the most valuable tool in your arsenal.
That’s exactly why these missions remain memorable more than twenty years later.
If there’s one lesson I’ve learned from replaying Halo CE over the years, it’s this:
The Flood punish panic but reward discipline.
Stay mobile. Protect your space. Carry the Shotgun whenever possible. Let enemy factions weaken each other instead of charging into every fight.
Do that, and even Legendary difficulty becomes less about impossible odds and more about making consistently smart decisions.
And honestly, that’s what has always made Halo: Combat Evolved such a timeless classic.
