Is WARDOGS Playtest Free to Join? How to Get Access in 2026

If you’ve been watching the tactical shooter scene lately, you’ve probably noticed that WARDOGS is becoming harder and harder to ignore. Developed by BULKHEAD and published by Team17, the upcoming shooter is aiming for something that sounds incredibly ambitious on paper: 100-player combined-arms warfare, three competing teams, destructible environments, vehicles, an in-match economy, and grounded gunplay.

That combination immediately caught my attention because WARDOGS doesn’t look like another shooter trying to copy the latest Call of Duty formula. At the same time, it doesn’t seem interested in becoming a second job like some hardcore mil-sims can feel.

With the game approaching Early Access, there’s one question I keep seeing everywhere: Is the WARDOGS playtest free, and how can you actually get in?

The short version is yes — you can request access for free. But there’s an important difference between requesting a free spot and actually being guaranteed a place in the test.

So, Is the WARDOGS Playtest Free?

Yes. Applying for the WARDOGS playtest does not cost anything.

The free route is handled through Steam’s Playtest system, where players can request access without purchasing the game. BULKHEAD is using this approach to gradually expand its testing population instead of immediately throwing every interested player onto the servers.

And honestly, I think that makes sense.

WARDOGS is built around huge multiplayer battles, so server stability is going to be absolutely critical. A game can have fantastic weapons and vehicle mechanics, but if 100 players turn into rubber-banding disasters every match, nobody is going to care.

The problem is demand.

WARDOGS has reportedly passed one million Steam wishlists, which means the number of people who want to test the game is potentially much larger than the number of players the developers can safely accommodate during a limited test.

So there’s a catch:

Free application does not mean guaranteed access.

You can join the selection pool without spending a cent, but BULKHEAD ultimately controls how many players are invited.

That last option is obviously going to attract attention, especially from players who already know they want to buy WARDOGS anyway.

The Two Ways to Enter the WARDOGS Beta

For the August 2026 testing period, there are effectively two different approaches.

Is WARDOGS Playtest Free to Join? How to Get Access in 2026

1. Request Free Access

This is the option I would try first if you’re curious about the game but aren’t ready to spend money on it.

Head to the WARDOGS Steam store page and look for the “Join the WARDOGS Playtest” section. From there, you can request access through Steam.

If you’re selected, the playtest becomes available through your Steam account and you can download the client.

The important thing is not to confuse the button with a normal game purchase. Requesting access itself is free.

The downside is obvious: you might not get selected.

With a game attracting this much attention, I wouldn’t treat the free request as a guaranteed ticket.

2. Pre-Order for Guaranteed Access

The second route is much simpler: pre-order the game on Steam.

According to the rollout described by the developers, pre-ordering the base game guarantees access to the Closed Beta playtest. The listed Early Access price is $39.99 USD.

This is obviously a much bigger commitment than clicking a free Steam button.

Personally, I’d only use this route if you already think WARDOGS is a game you’re likely to buy anyway. Paying $39.99 purely because you want to test a game for one weekend isn’t necessarily attractive for everyone.

However, for someone already sold on the concept, the calculation is different. You’re essentially buying the game early and getting access to the test as part of that purchase.

What About the Refund?

This is one of the more interesting parts of the WARDOGS strategy.

BULKHEAD has been unusually open about the fact that Early Access is Early Access. The developers have discussed potential bugs, optimization problems, balance issues and the general risks of buying an unfinished game.

Their “10 Reasons NOT to Buy” approach is actually something I appreciate.

Too many games spend months telling players that everything is going to be perfect, only for the Early Access launch to arrive with a mountain of technical problems. Being upfront about those issues at least gives players a realistic expectation.

If you decide to pre-order WARDOGS to obtain guaranteed playtest access, the purchase remains subject to Steam’s standard refund rules.

That distinction matters.

I wouldn’t describe the purchase as magically “risk-free,” because Steam’s refund policy has its own conditions. But if you buy the game, play the test and decide that WARDOGS simply isn’t for you, you may be able to request a refund as long as you meet Steam’s requirements.

That makes the decision considerably easier for players who are already interested in the game.

How I’d Try to Get a Free WARDOGS Invite

If I wanted to get into the WARDOGS playtest without spending money, I’d start with the basics and make sure I hadn’t missed any developer requirements.

Is WARDOGS Playtest Free to Join? How to Get Access in 2026

Step 1: Request Access on Steam

Open Steam, find WARDOGS and look for the official playtest section.

Click Request Access and make sure the request is connected to the Steam account you actually intend to use for playing.

It sounds obvious, but with limited playtests, using the wrong account or assuming your request went through without checking is exactly the kind of thing that can ruin your weekend.

Step 2: Join the Official Community Channels

BULKHEAD has also been building a dedicated community around WARDOGS. Registering through the official community infrastructure and linking your Steam or Discord account can make sure you don’t miss important testing announcements.

I wouldn’t expect community registration alone to magically guarantee an invite, though.

There are always people online claiming that a particular trick will “100% get you selected.” I’d be skeptical of that stuff.

Step 3: Complete Any Hardware Survey

This one is much more important from a testing perspective.

If the developers send you a hardware survey, fill it out accurately.

Large-scale PC games need data from all sorts of machines. A developer doesn’t just want to know whether WARDOGS runs on an RTX 5090. They also need to know what happens on older GPUs, mainstream gaming PCs and less powerful systems.

So don’t lie about your hardware because you think a more impressive PC will improve your chances.

The entire point of a technical test is to provide useful data.

Step 4: Keep an Eye on Your Email and Steam Account

This is probably the most boring piece of advice, but it’s also one of the most useful.

Check the email address associated with your Steam account and watch for official WARDOGS announcements.

If you get an invite, you don’t want to discover it three days later because the message was sitting unnoticed in your inbox.

What Can You Actually Do in the Playtest?

This is where WARDOGS becomes much more interesting to me.

The game isn’t simply trying to create another five-versus-five tactical shooter.

The headline feature is its massive 100-player Control Zone mode, where players are divided into three rival mercenary teams.

That three-way structure could completely change the rhythm of a match.

In a conventional two-team shooter, you usually know exactly where the enemy is coming from. With three factions fighting over objectives, every engagement becomes more complicated. The team you aren’t currently fighting might suddenly become the biggest threat.

And then there are the vehicles.

Players can use different forms of transport and military hardware while moving around a large battlefield. Helicopters aren’t simply background scenery either — supporting your team with transport can contribute to the overall economy.

That is the part of WARDOGS I’m particularly interested in.

The WARDOGS Economy Could Be Its Secret Weapon

The game apparently ties much of the battlefield activity into an in-match cash system.

You earn money by doing things such as:

  • Capturing objectives
  • Eliminating enemy players
  • Supporting teammates
  • Transporting squad members
  • Controlling important areas

That cash can then be used during the match to obtain better weapons, vehicles and tactical equipment.

On paper, this could make WARDOGS feel much more dynamic than a standard shooter.

Imagine starting a match with relatively basic equipment, then gradually building up your team’s capabilities because you’re successfully controlling the battlefield.

That’s a much more interesting loop to me than simply grinding kills because the scoreboard says kills are everything.

It also gives support players a genuine reason to exist.

If you’re the person who prefers flying a transport helicopter, supplying teammates or helping capture objectives rather than chasing a 40-kill game, WARDOGS appears to be designed to reward that playstyle.

The Game Is Trying to Find a Middle Ground

One of the biggest questions surrounding WARDOGS is where exactly it fits.

It’s clearly more ambitious and tactical than a traditional arcade shooter, but it doesn’t appear to be aiming for the brutal complexity associated with games like Squad or Escape from Tarkov.

That middle ground is potentially WARDOGS’ biggest strength.

There are plenty of players who want more teamwork and tactical decision-making without spending 45 minutes organizing a military operation before anyone fires a shot.

If BULKHEAD can get that balance right, WARDOGS could occupy a very interesting space.

Of course, that’s a big “if.”

The difference between an exciting concept and a genuinely great shooter comes down to execution. Gunplay needs to feel good. Vehicles need to be reliable. Maps need to support the player count. And most importantly, the servers need to survive the chaos.

Is the Playtest Worth Chasing?

For me, absolutely — if you’re already interested in tactical shooters.

The free application is a no-brainer. There’s no reason not to request access if you’re curious about WARDOGS.

The pre-order is a different story.

I wouldn’t recommend spending $39.99 solely because you feel pressured to get into a beta. But if you already planned to buy WARDOGS when Early Access launches, getting guaranteed playtest access makes the pre-order considerably more appealing.

The August 21–23 testing window is especially important because this is exactly the kind of large-scale stress test a game like WARDOGS needs before launch.

WARDOGS Early Access Release Date

The current schedule places the WARDOGS Early Access launch on September 10, 2026.

That means the Closed Beta is effectively the final major preview before the public release.

If the servers hold up, the gunplay feels solid and the three-team battles actually create interesting tactical situations, WARDOGS could have something special on its hands.

And honestly, that’s what I’m hoping for.

I’m tired of every multiplayer shooter being described as the next massive revolution and then turning out to be another collection of familiar mechanics wrapped in a new skin.

WARDOGS at least has a few ideas that make me curious.

One hundred players. Three teams. Vehicles. Destruction. Economy. Tactical teamwork.

That’s enough to get my attention.

Final Verdict: How Should You Get Into WARDOGS?

If you’re wondering “Is the WARDOGS playtest free?”, the answer is straightforward: yes, requesting access is free.

The catch is that free access isn’t guaranteed.

If you don’t want to spend anything, submit your Steam playtest request, register through the official community channels when appropriate, complete any hardware survey you receive and keep checking your account for an invitation.

If you’re already planning to purchase the game, the $39.99 pre-order route offers guaranteed access and is therefore the much safer option for anyone who absolutely wants to play during the August test.

For everyone else, I’d simply request the free invite and wait.

After all, the game is supposedly only a few weeks away from Early Access.

And if WARDOGS really can deliver the chaotic, tactical 100-player warfare its developers are promising, waiting a little longer might be one of the easiest decisions a shooter fan can make this year.
