The process is simple:

1. Climb the Stela.
2. Activate Eagle Vision.
3. Rotate the glowing symbol.
4. Match it with nearby ruins, trees, cliffs, or pillars.
5. Confirm the alignment.
6. Follow the glowing marker.
7. Dig up the hidden Mayan Stone.

Although the puzzles aren’t especially difficult, some environments make it surprisingly easy to overlook the correct angle.

Complete Mayan Stone Locations

Great Inagua

Everyone starts here.

James Kidd introduces the mechanic naturally during the main story, making this impossible to miss. The puzzle is intentionally simple, helping new players understand how Eagle Vision alignment works before more complicated locations appear.

Cape Bonavista

Returning to the island where Edward’s adventure began feels surprisingly nostalgic.

The Stela overlooks the waterfall near the northern side of the island. Once you align the projection with the rock formations below, the treasure can be dug from the shallow pool.

This is usually one of the earliest optional stones I recommend grabbing.

Cat Island

The northern cliffs hide this collectible.

The alignment uses several weathered wooden posts that blend into the landscape, so take your time before rotating the symbol too quickly.

Matanzas

Dense vegetation makes this location slightly more annoying than difficult.

The puzzle itself is straightforward once you spot the ruined stone columns inside the jungle clearing.

Tortuga

Probably the easiest optional Mayan Stone in the game.

You barely need to leave the shoreline after docking the Jackdaw, making this an excellent quick stop while sailing across the Caribbean.

Tulum

You’ll revisit Tulum several times during the campaign, but the Stela becomes safely accessible once the Assassins stop treating Edward as an intruder.

The surrounding ruins provide very obvious landmarks for the alignment puzzle.

Pinos Isle

Pinos Isle contains two separate Mayan Stones.

The first is hidden among scattered ruins in the middle of the island.

The second sits closer to the northeastern coastline and uses larger structures as reference points.

I recommend collecting both during the same visit instead of returning later.

Misteriosa

Another island with two collectibles.

The temple Stela offers one of my favorite viewpoints in the remake thanks to the upgraded lighting engine.

The second puzzle near the beach is much easier and can be completed within a couple of minutes after finishing the first.

New Bone

New Bone deserves a little patience.

Although the Stela itself isn’t inside the restricted military area, guards patrol nearby. Staying outside their vision cones saves unnecessary fighting and speeds up the collectible run.

Santanillas

Santanillas also features two Stelae.

Both puzzles rely heavily on natural rock formations instead of large ruins.

The first overlooks the southern cliffs, while the second sits closer to the island’s center.

Neither puzzle is particularly difficult once you’ve solved several earlier Stelae.

Isla Providencia

These become available much later in the campaign.

The first puzzle is located on overgrown ruins and is relatively peaceful.

The second is another story.

You’ll need to infiltrate a heavily guarded restricted area before climbing the Stela.

Thankfully, Black Flag Resynced’s smoother stealth controls make avoiding soldiers considerably easier than I remember from the original release.

Long Bay

This is the final Mayan Stone for most players.

Because Long Bay doesn’t unlock until late in the story, many people assume they’ve missed earlier collectibles.

Thankfully, every previous Stela remains available, so nothing is permanently missable.

After solving this final puzzle, you’ll finally have all sixteen stones needed for the vault.

Tips That Saved Me Time

After finishing all sixteen puzzles, there are a few things I’d recommend to anyone starting the hunt.

• Collect nearby stones while exploring naturally instead of sailing back later.
• Synchronize viewpoints first whenever possible.
• Upgrade the Jackdaw early to reduce travel frustration.
• Ignore perfect completion until Sequence 10, when nearly every island is available.
• Watch the environment instead of the projection—the landmarks are usually easier to identify than the glowing pattern itself.

These small habits saved me a surprising amount of travel time.

Unlocking the Mayan Outfit

Once every Mayan Stone has been collected, return to Tulum.

Inside the Assassin sanctuary sits the ancient vault designed specifically for these sixteen stones.

Insert every collected keystone, watch the mechanism activate, and claim the legendary Mayan Outfit.

For me, this moment is still one of the most satisfying rewards in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag. It feels earned rather than simply handed to the player. After spending hours exploring forgotten ruins, climbing temples, and sailing between islands, finally opening that vault delivers a genuine sense of accomplishment.

The outfit isn’t just cosmetic either. Since it completely negates damage from enemy bullets, naval boarding missions, fort assaults, and large melee encounters become noticeably less stressful. Melee enemies can still threaten you, but musket volleys stop being something you constantly have to worry about.

Final Thoughts

Even after all these years, I still think the Mayan Stones represent one of the best collectible activities Ubisoft has ever created. They encourage exploration without becoming repetitive, the puzzles are quick enough to stay enjoyable, and the reward remains genuinely useful throughout the rest of the adventure.

If you’re aiming for 100% completion in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, this should be near the top of your priority list. My biggest advice is not to treat the Stelae as a post-game chore. Pick them up naturally as you unlock new regions, enjoy the incredible Caribbean scenery, and let the collection progress alongside the main story. By the time Edward reaches the final chapters, you’ll already be wearing one of the most recognizable outfits in the series—and you’ll appreciate every musket ball that harmlessly bounces away.
