There is something wonderfully ridiculous about playing Wanderburg on a Steam Deck. You are sitting there with a handheld console in your hands, while on the screen an enormous medieval fortress is rolling across the landscape, tearing apart villages, collecting resources, firing ridiculous siege weapons, and generally causing the kind of chaos that should make a portable PC cry.
And, honestly, that is exactly why I wanted to get the Steam Deck version running properly.
Wanderburg is a fantastic fit for handheld gaming. Its minimalist visual style looks great on the Deck’s screen, runs don’t necessarily require hours of uninterrupted commitment, and the roguelike structure makes it very easy to tell yourself, “I’ll just do one more run.”
The problem is that the game can become surprisingly demanding once the battlefield gets busy.
Early encounters are relatively harmless. Later on, though, you can have multiple mobile fortresses, destruction effects, physics calculations, projectiles, particles, and dozens of objects moving around simultaneously. That’s when an apparently simple game starts exposing the limits of the Steam Deck hardware.
After spending time tweaking the important settings, I’ve found that resolution is easily the first thing you should check. Once that’s sorted, the rest of the configuration is fairly straightforward.
So, if you’re looking for the best Wanderburg Steam Deck settings, here’s the setup I’d start with.
Is Wanderburg Good on Steam Deck?
Yes — with one important caveat.
Wanderburg runs nicely on Steam Deck when configured correctly, and its art direction means you don’t have to destroy the visual quality to get good performance. You can keep textures relatively high while cutting back on the settings that actually matter during large battles.
The biggest problem I’ve encountered is the game’s tendency to use an inappropriate resolution on the first launch.
The Steam Deck’s native display resolution is 1280×800, but Wanderburg may attempt to start at 1920×1080 or another resolution depending on the configuration. That’s obviously not ideal.
You’re effectively asking the Deck to render more pixels than it needs to while simultaneously scaling that image back down to the handheld’s display.
That’s wasted performance.
And in Wanderburg, wasted performance becomes noticeable very quickly when your castle turns into a moving pile of smoke, explosions, debris, and machinery.
First Fix: Set Wanderburg to 1280×800
Before touching shadows, effects, anti-aliasing, or anything else, check the resolution.
This is the single setting I’d recommend changing first.
Go into Wanderburg → Options → Video Settings and look for Resolution.
Set it to:
1280×800
For Display Mode, I’d personally use Borderless Windowed. Fullscreen is also perfectly reasonable, but Borderless tends to behave nicely when you’re jumping between the game and the SteamOS interface.
If the game refuses to respect the resolution, you can also check Wanderburg’s Steam properties before launching and configure the game’s resolution there.
The goal is simple: make Wanderburg render at the Steam Deck’s native 1280×800 resolution.
Why Resolution Matters So Much
The difference between 1280×800 and 1920×1080 isn’t a tiny visual adjustment.
1920×1080 contains more than twice as many pixels as 1280×800. Rendering that additional workload on a Steam Deck makes very little sense when the final image is displayed on an 800p screen.
This is particularly important in the later stages of a run.
When nothing is happening, you might not notice the problem. When three fortresses are collapsing at the same time and the screen is filled with effects, however, the extra workload can turn into obvious frame-time spikes.
My Recommended Wanderburg Steam Deck Settings
Once the resolution is fixed, I wouldn’t go crazy lowering everything.
One of the nice things about Wanderburg is that its visual style doesn’t demand ultra settings to look good. In fact, some settings can remain surprisingly high without causing much trouble.
Here’s the configuration I’d use as a starting point:

I prefer this approach because it keeps the game looking like Wanderburg rather than turning everything into a blurry low-detail mess.
Don’t Lower Texture Quality First
This is one of those settings where I think people often make the wrong compromise.
If you’re struggling with performance, texture quality wouldn’t be my first target.
Wanderburg’s textures aren’t particularly problematic for the Steam Deck, and dropping them can make the game look noticeably worse without delivering the kind of performance improvement you’re hoping for.
I’d rather keep Texture Quality on High and reduce shadows or effects.
The difference is immediately visible when you’re looking at your fortress and its various modules. Keeping those textures crisp makes the game feel considerably cleaner on the Deck’s 800p display.
Shadows Are a Better Performance Target
If you need more FPS, shadows are one of the first things I’d reduce.
Wanderburg has a lot going on visually. Fortresses move, objects break, buildings collapse, and the battlefield constantly changes. Dynamic shadows have to respond to all of that.
That’s exactly the kind of workload that can become expensive during large encounters.
I recommend:
Shadow Quality: Medium
If you’re still seeing drops during particularly chaotic moments, go to Low.
Personally, I’d rather sacrifice some shadow detail than deal with a sudden stutter while trying to survive a crowded fight.
And because Wanderburg has such a stylized presentation, the visual difference between Medium and Low isn’t nearly as painful as it would be in a photorealistic game.
Effects Quality: Medium Is the Sweet Spot
Particle effects are another obvious candidate.
Explosions, smoke, projectiles and destruction effects look great, but when everything happens simultaneously, they can become expensive.
That’s why Effects Quality: Medium is my preferred setting.
You still get the visual feedback you need to understand what’s happening, but you’re not asking the Steam Deck to throw every possible particle effect at the screen during a massive battle.
I wouldn’t immediately drop this to Low unless you’re really struggling.
SMAA or FXAA?
For anti-aliasing, I’d stick with SMAA or FXAA.
If you prefer a slightly cleaner image, SMAA is the option I’d try first.
If you want to squeeze out a little more performance, FXAA is a perfectly sensible alternative.
I wouldn’t sacrifice resolution just to use a more demanding anti-aliasing method. On a Steam Deck, getting the fundamentals right is much more important.
SteamOS Settings Matter Too
This is the part that can make a good configuration feel much better.
After changing the in-game settings, open the Steam Deck Quick Access Menu and go into the Performance section.
For a normal 60FPS setup, I’d use:
- Refresh Rate: 60Hz
- Frame Rate Limit: 60FPS
- Allow Tearing: Off
- GPU Clock: Auto
- TDP: 11–12W as a starting point
I don’t think there’s much reason to force the Steam Deck to consume its full 15W if Wanderburg is already running comfortably below that ceiling.
A lower TDP can reduce power consumption and heat, although your exact result will depend on the particular scene and your Deck’s software configuration.
What About 50FPS?
This is actually an underrated option.
If you find that Wanderburg sits around 60FPS most of the time but occasionally dips during huge destruction sequences, 50FPS / 50Hz can feel remarkably consistent.
I’d rather have a stable 50FPS than a nominal 60FPS that constantly bounces between 60, 47, 55 and 39.
Frame pacing matters.
Especially on a handheld.
Want Longer Battery Life? Try 45FPS
This is where the Steam Deck really becomes interesting.
You don’t necessarily need 60FPS for Wanderburg to feel good.
A 45FPS target can be an excellent compromise if you’re playing away from a charger.
On an OLED Deck, the 90Hz display makes this particularly attractive because 45FPS divides evenly into 90Hz.
That gives you a very consistent presentation while reducing the amount of work the APU has to perform.
For longer sessions, I’d happily trade some FPS for battery life.
Wanderburg is a strategy-heavy action game rather than a competitive shooter, so I don’t think you’re losing much by doing this.
Steam Deck LCD vs OLED Performance
Both Steam Deck models are capable of running Wanderburg well, but the OLED model has some advantages when it comes to efficiency.

I wouldn’t treat estimated battery-life numbers as guarantees. Game patches, screen brightness, TDP behavior, background processes, and the intensity of your current run can all change power consumption.
What matters more is the general rule: lower FPS and lower power limits can give you substantially longer sessions.
What If Wanderburg Starts Stuttering?
If you’ve already set 1280×800 and you’re still seeing stutters, don’t immediately assume the Steam Deck simply isn’t powerful enough.
Early Access games can be unpredictable.
A patch can fix one performance issue and accidentally introduce another. Shader compilation, Proton compatibility, driver changes, or a particular game build can all contribute to strange behavior.
If Wanderburg suddenly starts acting worse after an update, I’d go through this checklist:
- Restart the Steam Deck completely.
- Check that the game is still using 1280×800.
- Try Proton Experimental if you’re experiencing launch or compatibility problems.
- Lower Shadows and Effects to Low temporarily.
- Test the game again after restarting it.
- Check whether the issue happens only during large destruction sequences.
The last point is important.
A short drop during an absolutely ridiculous late-game battle is very different from the game sitting at poor performance during normal exploration.
Don’t Forget the UI
There’s another small adjustment that makes a surprisingly big difference on Steam Deck.
Wanderburg contains menus for fortress construction, modules, weapons, and upgrades. Some of that information can feel cramped on a seven-inch screen.
If the game provides UI scaling options, I’d try 110% first.
If that’s still too small, 120% is worth testing.
I’d rather have slightly larger menus than constantly squint at the screen while trying to figure out which weapon module I just equipped.

My Final Wanderburg Steam Deck Setup
After stripping away all the unnecessary tweaking, my preferred configuration is pretty simple:
1280×800 resolution, Borderless Windowed, High textures, Medium shadows, Medium effects, SMAA, Medium post-processing, Medium physics, and a 60FPS system cap.
Then I’d use the SteamOS performance menu to manage the final frame-rate and power behavior.
If 60FPS isn’t perfectly stable during the most chaotic battles, don’t obsess over the number.
Try 50FPS.
If battery life is your priority, go for 45FPS.
That’s one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned with games like Wanderburg: a stable frame rate usually feels better than a higher number that constantly fluctuates.

Wanderburg is one of those games that feels almost made for Steam Deck, but you need to give the hardware a little help.
The most important step isn’t some obscure Proton command or an aggressive collection of low graphics settings. It’s simply making sure the game is actually rendering at the Deck’s native 1280×800 resolution.
From there, keep textures high, cut shadows and effects to Medium, use sensible anti-aliasing, and let SteamOS handle the final frame-rate limit.
That’s the setup I’d personally recommend.
The result is a sharp-looking medieval fortress rolling across the countryside without turning your Steam Deck into a miniature space heater. And when Wanderburg inevitably throws another enormous battlefield full of destruction at you, you’ll have considerably more performance headroom to enjoy the chaos.
Because let’s be honest — the whole point of Wanderburg is watching your ridiculous castle become even more ridiculous.
I’d rather spend my time building it than staring at a stutter.
